Collaborative Education

Currently, the Child Development Division is coordinating the following programs in collaboration with the California Department of Education:

  • Pregnant and Parenting Teen Programs (formerly CalSAFE)
  • Region 1 Training and Technical Assistance for After School Programs
  • KUDOS Mendocino County After School Consortium
  • Prevention Education

MCOE is also the LEA for the following in Mendocino County:

  • Local Child Care Planning Council
  • FIRST 5 School Readiness

FIRST 5 Mendocino's School Readiness Project was funded by a FIRST 5 California Initiative in 2002 and implemented by the Mendocino County Office of Education. Four Mendocino County elementary schools in Program Improvement chose to participate in this opportunity: Round Valley, Brookside, Hopland and Nokomis. "School readiness" is not just about "children being ready for school". The initiative approached it as a three-way street; families, communities, and schools must also be ready to care for and teach the children who come to them.

A free parent resource guide is provided to parents to help them prepare their child for Kindergarten. It features educational information, tips and fun activities.

  Universal Preschool

California, with almost 500,000 four-year old children in the state, has begun to lay the foundation to make high quality preschool available to every child prior to entering kindergarten. In 2003, First 5 California Children and Families Commission (CCFC) adopted a Preschool For All Initiative (PFA) to build on its School Readiness Initiative. Subsequently, First 5 California CCFC allocated 100 million for the next 5-7 years; $90 million for six First 5 Demonstration Projects; 10 million specifically for training and technical assistance.

Since 2003, the universal preschool movement has continued to grow and gain momentum. Some of California's largest counties' including Los Angeles, San Mateo, Santa Barbara and Sacramento have made Preschool For All a reality. At present, approximately 40 California counties, including Mendocino County, are in the process of planning for universal preschool.
