Region 1 Healthy Start and After School

Healthy Start

Mendocino County Office of Education supports Healthy Start resource centers in the five county area of Region 1: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake and Sonoma. Healthy Start Centers are resource centers on school sites that provide support to children and families. Many Healthy Start Centers offer space to county agencies such as Social Services and Public Health as a convenience to families.

Schools received funding for Healthy Start programs from 1991 to 2007. Though the funding is no longer available, most Healthy Start programs have sustained using local and foundation funding. Each Healthy Start is different because they respond to the needs of their individual communities.

After School Education and Safety (ASES)

The After School Education and Safety Program (ASES) provides funding to schools that offer tutoring, homework help, enrichment, physical education, art, music, and other activities that support students’ academic and social growth. 

ASES programs were voted into existence in 1999 by Proposition 49, when the voting public overwhelmingly agreed that after school programs were a necessity and should be provided for in the State budget. 

An After School Regional Lead provides training and technical assistance in each region.  For Region 1 that is Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake and Sonoma Counties. 

21st Century Community Learning Center

The 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) federally-funded after school programs are funded through the United States Department of Education (USDE).  USDE passes the funding to each state Department of Education. 

California Department of Education funds 21st CCLC programs in schools and community based organizations throughout the state through an annual application process. 

21st CCLC began to respond to the need for children and youth to have a safe place in the out of school hours each weekday, and to protect communities from juvenile crime.  According to Fight Crime Invest In Kids (http://www.fightcrime.org/), 3:00 to 6:00 PM are the prime hours for victimization of children, and for juvenile crime. 

21st CCLC programs fund after school tutoring, homework help, enrichment, art, music, physical education, literacy and a variety of other activities that support students' academic and social growth, and make the communities a safer place during the hours of 3:00-6:00 each week day.
