Certification & Credentials Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) BCLAD2 Certificates authorize instruction to limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. The Mendocino County Office of Education co-sponsors teacher preparation classes for BCLAD certification. Specific information regarding the BCLAD certificate may be obtained through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/default.html Bilingual Teacher Training Program (BTTP) The Bilingual Teacher Training Program is designed to enable teachers who are already in the workforce to respond to the needs of today's ethnically and linguistically diverse student population. The Project offers training on language development, the process of second language acquisition, techniques for teaching English, and strategies for teaching students of diverse backgrounds. Teachers may take classes that prepare them for obtaining a Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) certificate for bilingual instruction, or a Crosscultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate for English-only instruction. The Mendocino County Office of Education co-sponsors teacher preparation classes for CLAD and BCLAD certification. Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD) CLAD Certificates authorize instruction to limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. With most prerequisite credentials or permits, English Language Development (ELD) and instruction for primary language development are authorized at preschool, K-12. With a Children's Center Instructional Permit, Children's Center Supervision Permit Or Child Development Permit, ELD and instruction for primary language development are limited to the programs authorized by the permit. With a designated subjects teaching credential in adult education, ELD and instruction for primary language development are limited to classes organized primarily for adults. With all prerequisite credentials or permits, Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) and content instruction delivered in the primary language are authorized in subjects and grade levels of the prerequisite credential or permit. The Mendocino County Office of Education co-sponsors teacher preparation classes for CLAD and BCLAD certification. Specific information regarding the CLAD certificate may be obtained through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at: Designated Subjects (D.S.) Credential Program Designated Subjects Credentials authorize teaching or service in technical, trade or vocational courses or in courses organized primarily for adults. The requirements generally include experience in the subject. The D.S. Credential Program is offered by the Sonoma County Office of Education as a personalized preparation program for the Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential and the Designated Subjects Vocational Education Teaching Credential. This is available to teachers employed by the Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, or Sonoma County Offices of Education to teach vocational or adult education and have a preliminary credential in either of those areas. The DS Program is a collaborative program with the North Coast Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA), and uses the BTSA program model to deliver the required skills and knowledge. For specific information about teaching in vocational or adult education in California's public schools, check with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing at: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/default.html English Language Development (ELD) Instruction for English language development (ELD) means instruction designed specifically for LEP students to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This type of instruction is also known as "English as a second language" (ESL) or "teaching English to speakers of other languages" (TESOL). The Mendocino County Office of Education offers ELD classes every other summer. Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered In English (SDAIE) Specially designed academic instruction delivered in English (SDAIE) means instruction in a subject area, delivered in English, that is specially designed to provide LEP students with access to the curriculum.
