The Mendocino County Office of Education sponsors and coordinates five countywide student enrichment programs. These academic events are designed to support, encourage, recognize, and promote student learning. Each event targets a different cadre of talented students. For teachers, these events encourage and motivate student learning as well as providing academic resources. Three student enrichment programs provide schools with direct funding for these activities: Poets in the Schools, Get Arts in the Schools (GASP), and Young Authors’ Fair.
GET ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS (GASP)
The program is funded by the Mendocino County Office of Education with additional funding from private donors. GASP funds artist workshops and live performances in Mendocino County schools during the school year. The goal of the program is to infuse the arts in the core curriculum and to involve and expose school children to quality, educational, curriculum-based artistic experiences. Artists work closely with classroom teachers and after-school coordinators to enrich the curriculum by presenting arts programs that are relevant to other core academic subjects.
The County Mock Trial program is sponsored and coordinated by the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE). For more information, please click here.

POETS IN THE SCHOOLS
Since 1964, California Poets in the Schools has been teaching the writing of poetry all across the great state of California. Here in Mendocino County, with the financial support of the Mendocino County Office of Education, we serve every high school in the county as well as offering special programs that provide opportunities for youth to perform their work publicly, see their poems published and broadcast over the airwaves, and enjoy the dynamic connections between other art forms and their poetic creations. Individual middle and elementary schools contract with us to bring creativity and emotion to their classrooms, and wherever we go, students’ lives are touched in ways that go deep as the roots of a redwood tree.
The Mendocino County Science Fair provides opportunities for students grade 3-12 to showcase their science projects on various topics ranging from life sciences, physical sciences, earth and space sciences, and engineering. For more information, please click here.
YOUNG AUTHORS’ FAIR
The purpose of this project is to inspire students in elementary schools to write, edit, and publish their own stories. An elementary school may apply for the award funding by completing the Young Authors’ Fair Project Proposal. Schools that have received funding report that participation in this project enhances children’s writing abilities and appreciation of literature. Funding is sometimes used to pay for an author to visit the school to talk with students about the writing process, to share their work, and to motivate the students to write their own stories. Schools often hold special events in special recognition for the students’ accomplishments.
