The Teaching Edge: August 2026 Professional Development Week

Sharpen your toolkit and start the school year with fresh ideas and practical strategies. Mendocino County Office of Education invites educators to attend a full week of professional learning designed to strengthen instruction and create meaningful classroom experiences. Attend one session or join us for multiple days of learning and collaboration. Attendees must register for each event separately. Registration links are below.

Conference Kickoff

Monday, August 3, 2026

Launch the week with a dynamic day of learning focused on high-impact instructional practices. Session topics include implementing UDL through classic teacher moves (Firm Goals/Flexible Means), collaborative activities that shift the thinking to students, language and literacy in primary grades, and communication through improv activities with Ukiah Players Theater.

Native American Studies Model Curriculum

Wednesday, August 5, 2026

Educators will explore the vision of the Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC) while gaining practical skills to navigate grade-specific resources and model lessons. By the end of the session, participants will have begun integrating these units into their yearly curriculum, leaving with a clear framework for continued collaborative planning. The day features a keynote and lessons from Maggie Peters (Humboldt COE Native American Studies Specialist), alongside sessions facilitated by MCOE learning specialists.

Facilitated Planning Day

Bring learning into action. Teachers who attended one or more previous sessions are invited to spend the day planning how to integrate new strategies into daily practice. Focus areas may include Integrated EL strategies, NASMC model lessons, UDL principles, and more, with support from MCOE staff and grade-level colleagues.

New Teacher Bootcamp

August 6–7, 2026

Enhancing Pedagogy with Generative AI

August 7, 2026
9:00 am – 3:00 pm

This session focuses on the practical and instructional applications of generative AI. Participants will develop functional, pedagogical, and ethical skills to support effective classroom use, followed by implementation activities between September and December. To support classroom application, participation stipends are available. Hosted in partnership with the University of Washington, this workshop has limited space, and priority will be given to educator pairs or teams from the same school or district.
